The Department of Roads and Transport in Gauteng is seeking a highly skilled and experienced individual to fill the critical role of Deputy Director General for Transport. This senior leadership position is based in Johannesburg and offers a competitive all-inclusive remuneration package.

Salary Package
R1,741,770 – R1,962,090 per annum (all-inclusive package).
This package includes a basic salary (70% of the total) and a flexible portion (30%) that can be structured according to applicable rules. It also includes the state’s contribution to the Government Employees Pension Fund (13% of basic salary). The successful candidate will be required to sign a performance agreement within three months of starting duty.
Key Responsibilities
As the Deputy Director General, you will be responsible for leading and overseeing the strategic planning, integration, and management of transport initiatives across the Gauteng Province. Your duties will include:
- Managing and integrating overall transport planning for the province.
- Planning and developing transport infrastructure.
- Developing roads and transport policies and promoting inter-governmental relations (IGR).
- Ensuring effective implementation of the Gauteng Freight Implementation Strategy and integrating rail into the provincial transport network.
- Overseeing the provision of integrated public transport services, including modal integration and special projects.
- Managing public transport operations.
- Managing Road Traffic Act (RTA) fee collection and the eNatis system.
- Managing registration authorities and ensuring legislative compliance.
- Overseeing Provincial Registration Authority functions.
- Administering operating licenses, converting radius-based permits, and implementing the Taxi Recapitalization Project (TRP).
- Adjudicating applications for operating licenses.
- Monitoring and overseeing public transport operations.
- Conducting investigations related to land transport and providing recommendations to the MEC.
- Providing input on policy matters affecting operating license applications and public transport oversight.
- Contributing to the Department’s overall strategy development.
- Ensuring the development and implementation of business and operational plans for the unit.
- Managing the overall performance of the branch/unit.
- Building and fostering partnerships with various internal and external stakeholders.
- Providing leadership and strategic direction within the unit in identifying policy gaps, determining policy goals, and drafting policy documents as required.
- Ensuring effective risk management and compliance with all relevant legislation, regulations, and departmental policies and procedures.
- Ensuring compliance with all audit requirements.
- Managing the component’s resources and performing general management functions.
Requirements
To be considered for this pivotal role, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Education: Postgraduate qualification (NQF Level 8) in Civil Engineering, Transport Economics, Transport Management, or Urban Planning, as recognized by SAQA.
- Experience: At least 8 years of experience at a senior management level within a Transport management environment/field.
- License: Valid Driver’s License.

Key Competencies & Skills:
Candidates should possess a strong working knowledge and understanding of Government regulatory frameworks and policies governing transport and roads, including the Provincial Medium Term Development Plan Gauteng Vision 2023, National Land Transport Strategic Framework, Provincial Land Transport Strategic Framework, Public Service Regulations (PSR), Public Finance Management Act (PFMA), Public Service Act (PSA), Departmental Strategic Planning, and Departmental Annual Performance Plans.
Essential skills include: Strategic capability and leadership, problem-solving and analysis, creativity, financial management, customer focus and responsiveness, communication, computer literacy, negotiation, conflict management, change management, planning, and organizing skills.
